Sugar Swaps – Is there too much sugar in your diet?
Most people are fond of a delicious sweet treat now and again, maybe even more than just ‘now and again’… But are we really that conscious of what we’re actually putting into our bodies when we sink our teeth into a chocolate cake or chew as many gummy sweets as we possibly can? Yeah, we know there’s a lot of sugar in these things but accompanied by the other parts of our diets, the average person in the UK is consuming roughly 3 times as much sugar as they normally should which would suggest we don’t really know what we are eating at all… or just don’t care.
Too much sugar can lead to the build-up of harmful fat on the inside that we can’t see. This fat around vital organs can cause weight gain and serious diseases in the future like heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. Having too much sugar can also cause tooth decay.
There are ways around this however! There is plenty of information on the Change 4 Life website: https://www.nhs.uk/change4life/food-facts/sugar on how you can make yours and your children’s diets healthier through sugar swaps – consisting small day to day changes.
Here at the Market, Sweets for All, our resident Sweet trader emphasises greatly how sugar swaps can make a change to your day to day life. Paul, the owner of Sweets for all states “we certainly have the largest range of sugar free sweets in Watford; maybe in Hertfordshire with 26 varieties such as boiled sweets and Devon toffee.”
“We also have a good range of gluten free sweets for those that are coeliac or intolerant to wheat and halal sweets.”
If you’d like to visit Sweets for All, you’ll find them open daily inside the market within Unit 5 where they’ll happily take you through their range of sugar free (and sugar filled) sweets – and even let you try before you buy!
